I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Fantasia has released a Christmas album. I guess it was rather more about when rather than if she will make one, and she finally has! It should be a bit more publicised I should say.
According to Fantasia, Christmas After Midnight is an homage to her grandmother, who was born on Christmas Day, and the great singers of yesteryears including Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and Ray Charles, and these influences are really apparent on the tracks she chose for the album.
Holiday classics and favourites like “The Christmas Song”, “Silent Night”, and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, amongst many others. She also duets with CeeLo Green on “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”. I think “The Snow is Falling” might be an original track.
“Give Love on Christmas Day” is one of my favourite tracks on the album. I have to say that I have never heard this before (though I eventually found out that it is a Jackson 5 number), and her rendition is very touching. The album ends with “Hallelujah”, which I think is very apt, and really sums up the spirit of the season.
Produced by Ron Fair, Christmas After Midnight is really well-crafted and put together, something I wish more albums today were like. On top of that, you have the amazing Fantasia giving her soulful take on classics we have heard since our younger days, and spreading the much needed warmth and love in these uncertain times.
