Review: 再愛一遍•天后 by 陳勢安

It has been a while since a male voice (or any new singer’s voice in general) caught my attention, and the way I found out about this particular singer was quite random – I was reading my newspaper as usual on a Sunday morning, playing the MTV China Channel (or was it Channel V Taiwan/ China) on my TV, when suddenly this particular music video “心.洞” started playing:

The music video was quite cheesy, mainly because of the stuff that he said in the video, and also because it was almost like a flesh parade as well.  But what really caught my attention was his voice and I knew I had to get his album. I found out the singer was called 陳勢安, and I really had no idea who this person was. I also went to find out more about this singer. Apparently, Andrew’s a Malaysian and has been winning awards in various singing competitions, and has sort of been  around in the industry since 2006. He finally got his breakthrough in 2010 with a single called “天后”, which is supposedly a massive hit in Taiwan.

Anyway, I ordered my copy online from a Taiwanese CD retailer. I was really excited about the album since I haven’t bought a Mandarin music album since A-mei’s (which I haven’t had time to really review). The songs that really stood out for me were of course the singles: “心‧洞”, “不習慣喊痛” and “再愛一遍”. These are the typical ballads that one would expect from a pop singer, but he really delivered them really well. The rest of the album was, however, quite awkward. There was a duet with his label-mate Bii called “勢在必行”, which really showed the disparity in vocal talent between the 2. And there’s also a song written by Khalil Fong, “愛不簡單”, which I thought wasn’t handled too well by Andrew. I think it’s quite difficult to do a song by Khalil when it’s so distinctive, and the interpretation and groove wasn’t really present. Of course, the massive hit  ”天后” is also included.

Having said all these, I thought the album was a good effort, though I think that better songs, or songs that really suited Andrew could have been recorded. I hope we get to hear more music from him in the future.
