Review: Butterfly, Jolin Tsai

jolin

It’s always a big thing when Jolin releases an album since she’s one of the few artistes around that can move thousands of records in a single week, and also for the fact that she brings different surprises each time. However, it has been more of a disappointment so far though.

Firstly, the album cover and the shots in the lyrics booklet look as if they were shot on an extremely tight budget. What happened to sassiness that was found in her recent albums? The whole “cheap” packaging is totally unacceptable! What was Warner Music Taiwan thinking when they were conceptualising the design for the album! My goodness! It is really quite a turn off to buy an album with an atrocious cover art.

Next, the songs are not really of much quality this time round. The uptempo tracks are sort of “weird”, and a bit disco-ish at times; and the slow ballads tend to show more of her flaws. And most of the songs are actually covers! Even the first single, 大丈夫, isn’t really a catchy tune. But, the ballads are sort of more listen-able to for this album. 妥協, for instance, is really a nice song, and Jolin does a decent attempt at the song. But one should note that her singing/ vocal delivery has definitely matured.

Overall it just seems as if very little effort, if any, was put into making this entire album  even though we know that Jolin did painstakingly learn new dance moves. However, this is not enough to salvage the album. In comparison with her works with EMI Taiwan (now taken over by Gold Typhoon), this album really lacks in production, advertisement, packaging etc. We expect more from the pop princess of Mandarin Pop (and of course the company that is in charge of her)!

Hopefully her first fashion line does better in the States!
